I received this chair last Wednesday. Upon receipt, I began assembly, and after spending an inordinate amount of time trying to assemble the chair (most of the problems were with me, not the chair during assembly), I discovered that I too had received a chair with improperly aligned bolt holes. No amount of pushing, prodding, pulling, kicking or screaming would get the holes aligned. I had resigned myself to having an issue similar to other reviewers, but decided to try contacting the company.I emailed them Wednesday afternoon. I wasn't the nicest of persons when I emailed them as I was frustrated. About an hour later, I had a response, and even though I wasn't overly kind, Craig was.
Craig offered to ship a chair, with properly aligned holes, ASAP directly to me. Once they received my address information and realized I lived about 2 hours from their facility, they actually arranged for the PRESIDENT of the company to stop by and deliver the proper chair. I was a little surprised by this, but they wanted to show that they were interested in making this right. And make it right they did, and then some.
The rest of this review, I will focus on the new chair I received, over the old. Needless to say that while the old chair had the quality of the Highwood "plastic wood," I was entirely annoyed by the holes on the seat back not lining up properly.
Let's start at the beginning.
Shipping/packing:
I was a little disappointed in the packing of the chair. It was essentially in a heavy duty cardboard box, and the chair itself was simply wrapped in foam wrap. You could hear it sliding around in the box. Thankfully neither of the 2 chairs I came into contact with were damaged during shipping, but with the way USPS/UPS/FedEx shipping works, I can only imagine this won't be enough to properly protect the chair in all circumstances. According to John, the president, they are working on this. In the meantime, packing is merely serviceable.
Assembly:
This was another complaint I had. The instructions pictured a model chair that didn't match what was delivered. The instructions were essentially the same though. The other issue I have is the instructions are text heavy/centric. I didn't pay much attention to the details and actually assembled the chair the first time out with the rockers backwards. Careful attention to detail would have be beneficial on my part, but had there been pretty pictures with arrows, etc, it would have been an easier process. Assembly of the first chair took about an hour with all the flipping pieces and screwing in bolts.
Then there were the misaligned holes. This added another 20 minutes to the build time as I tried everything imaginable to align one set of holes on the seat back. I just couldn't align them, which is what necessitated the email mentioned at the start of my review.
On the second chair, assembly was easy (John actually put it together for me). Once I knew where everything was supposed to go, I'm sure I could have had it built in 30 minutes tops, and John had it together in 15 minutes. And with the proper bolt hole alignment, it all just kind of slid together. Mostly. One of the bolt holes had very little tolerance, so it needed a little extra loving to push through the hole.
Aesthetics:
The chair I received was white. And I would say this white matches any white I've ever seen for deck furniture.
The part I especially like is that it has a wood grain looking finish. I've seen plenty of furniture made from recycled plastic, but this is the first time I've seen it actually try to match wood in looks. Everything else I've seen looks "messy" and has an odd texture to it that I don't like. This looks like wood, so I greatly prefer this over the other type.
The bolts are kind of ugly. I'm not sure how else you would assemble the chair if not for bolts, but it doesn't change the fact that it's ugly. Also, the screws in the slats of the seat aren't all uniformly screwed in. This is minor and when you're sitting on the chair you won't see it.
Comfort:
The other two reviews currently mention that they don't think larger persons would fit well in the chair. I can't imagine that, as this chair is quite wide and quite high. I don't have any "large" friends of the size that wouldn't fit well in this chair, so I can't really say one way or another, other than my eyeballing it. According to John, they had a 400 lb Samoan, who works for the company, sat in it and was comfortable (this is hearsay, so take it as you will).
I'm just under 6 feet tall and about 155 lbs. I sit in the chair and am quite comfortable. It rocks well and smooth. Very nice.
Overall:
If I were to review the chair I originally received, it would be one star. No excuse for lack of quality control. If I review the new chair only, it's 4 stars based on packaging, etc, along with some aesthetic issues (the bolts are ugly, but not something you can easily fix or change).
I like the chair (replacement) chair. It's what I'd expect for the price, to a point. I'd expect a little prettier bolt design (not that I could do any better myself) for the price.
Pros:

Doesn't need to be refinished like real wood
Lower maintenance overall
Cons:
Poor quality control on first chair
Some unpleasing aesthetics in regards to bolts/screws
Expensive (but expected to a point given the price of the plastic decking material I've looked into moving to)
