My wife and I did a lot of looking on line and read a lot of reviews, and stayed away from lower priced items on the web because of concerns about potential durability (wood vs "wood products", real leather vs. synthetic leather of one sort or another such as "faux leather", "bonded leather", "Polyurethane coated cow leather" etc.). We are not purists on these things, but as engineers (at least the writer is), we wanted to be sure that (i) the seating surfaces would wear well, and have solid flat wood backing (i.e., won't eventually sag uncomfortably onto jutting wood or metal cross-pieces - something that plagued a similarly priced product elsewhere), and (ii) the wood support structure holds up for may years and is unlikely to chip easily when bumped by brooms and vacuum cleaners and clumsy hard-toed shoes. There were no reviews yet on line for these stools, but from the their description and that of others in the series we took the plunge and ordered four. All said and done we are very happy with them. They are heavy, the wood is hard and well finished, the leather seems very real and durable. However assembly was a slow and sometimes a tricky processes.
Some tips:
(1)The best way to get the protective polyethylene plastic cover off the leather seats themselves is to take out the black screws and lift the seats from the wood frame supporting then (not stated in in the instructions). Pay attention to the orientation to save having to figure it out later (on ours the labels on the bottom of the seat were oriented with the label 'tops' closest to the back.)
(2)Don't re-install these leather seats until AFTER you have attached the seat back and arms and legs and tightened them down somewhat - though not all the way. Otherwise you will run into seat leather edge pinching problems and difficulties getting the arm and back bolts in. When everything is in place then reattach the seat. In fact, have someone sit in the seat to push it into place, so the black screws on the bottom have lots to bite into and don't strip.
(3)Be patient in inserting and tightening the bolts, double check their alignment. We eventually used a little lithium grease so it was easier to tell if they were going in properly or not. Lithium grease or not, I don't think they will work loose and come out during use.
(4)We did a final tightening of all the bolts with someone sitting in the seat. This seemed to ensure the four legs touched the floor as evenly as possible.
Shortcomings of these stools: Initially the four seats varied in how much they rocked (four legs can do that). Part of this was was caused by our wood floors not being flat in the bar area, so trial and error arranging of the chairs made a big difference and minimized the problem.
All said this unevenness (worse on some chairs than others - one was flat) was ultimately the biggest shortcoming and seemed to result from lack of tight tolerances in manufacturing the crossing leg pairs. I did carefully pry off one of the round floor sliders and inserted a thick washer as a spacer and that helped quite a bit. However I can imagine some customer having to pry off the floor sliders, adding spacers or planing the leg bottoms and adding new sliders as removing the old ones is not easy without damaging them. These chairs are rock solid and heavy and I can imagine them being able to support a 350 lb person with little difficulty.
