After having this clock for many years, my husband and I decided to surprise our son and his wife with the same clock for Christmas. After checking prices online; without a doubt, Amazon had the best price and free shipping. I received the clock and base the day after ordering it (even during the pre-Christmas rush!). I started to second-guess my gift decision, as I did spend more than our normal budget; and I never even asked my son and daughter-in-law if they would even like to have a mantel clock. Christmas morning arrived and my doubts were not necessary...they loved the clock!
The additional price for the "ship's bell" was about $100 more than the same clock without the traditional chime; but well worth the extra cost. My daughter-in-law loved hearing the sound every half hour and commented that she had grown up in a home with clocks that chimed and hadn't realized how much she missed this comforting sound up until now! My son, who is a sailor, loved the traditional brass ship's clock and mahogany wood base...This was well worth going over budget on as I am sure they will enjoy the Weems & Plath Ship's Clock for many years; just as my husband and I have!
