12" Night Therapy NuRest® Better Than LatexTM Pressure Relief Mattress - King Review

I bought this bed last week. It came in a long rectangular box, and required two people to move around. Setup was as simple as breaking the box apart, and dragging the hot-dog like encased bed onto the bedframe. You cut open the encasing to reveal a heavily compressed bed, similar in appearance to a rolled sponge cake. You unroll that and cut open the thin, plastic layer keeping air out, and the bed instantly puffs up and begins to regain its intended size.

Awesome! Having waited all morning for the delivery I can go to work, hoping to come back to a fully recovered, new bed that I can sleep on....not quite. When I got home, my bedroom stank of chemicals from the bed off-gassing. I have the unpleasant biological response called "multiple chemical sensitivity" and as natural as this bed is marketed to be, my burning throat and asthma told me this bed isn't as natural or healthy as the marketing claims. I basically opened all the windows, closed my bedroom door, and slept at my partners house that night. A couple days later, after the bed was still off-gassing, and I have yet to sleep on it I emailed Zinus, the bed manufacturer and received this response:

Thank you for your e-mail. The off-gassing should dissipate with good ventilation of your room. It's best to make sure the window's are open and possibly using a fan to help ventilate the air. To include, have your bed sheet covers off, as this will prevent the smell from being trapped in. Some people are more sensitive to the smell than others. The smell itself is from when the mattress was manufactured. During the decompression stage, it traps the smell in and is required to air out. The smell and the scent from the mattress is not harmful. We highly recommended airing it out while you're at work or away from home with the windows fully open. If you have any questions, please reply to this e-mail.

For anybody familiar with memory foam beds, or similarly crafted beds, off-gassing is not news to them. I too am familiar with this off-gassing process, and realize that after the chemicals pass, you're left with a really comfortable bed. In this case, I'm upgrading from a Queen to a King which is the only reason I'm giving up my old bed.

So why bother with this review? The listing on Amazon doesn't portray any of the marketing put into this bed for it's eco-conscience or healthy marketing, and I think it needs some balance. Let me indulge you in a piece of this marketing:

Night Therapy embraces the idea of safe sleep.
Natural green tea is embedded into the memory foam and is a natural odor protectant.
Natural seed oil is used which minimizes the use of petroleum, and helps minimize growth of bacteria in a natural way.
Microscopic particles of active fresh charcoal help with absorbing moisture.
The packaging used for this product has a smaller carbon footprint and includes post consumer materials.

To be fair, they do minimize the use of petroleum...but only by 20%. For it to be a "safer" synthetic mattress, I would prefer this number to be much, much higher. The use of green tea & charcoal is interesting, but certainly must be beyond the off-gas period for its utility.

It's been 4 nights so far, and my NuRest bed is still relegated to spending its nights in the hallway to off-gas on its own while I sleep on my old memory foam mattress. It seems like this off-gassing has a half life, and so hopefully by the 7 night mark, I will be able to sleep on it.

The purpose of this lengthy review is merely to compare this bed against my past experience with synthetic beds, and to temper the marketing efforts with reality, and share what their customer service has to say about the off-gassing before you buy it.

I will update this review, maybe even change the star rating as I get more experience with this bed. I'm not saying it's not worth a buy, it is a pricey purchase, and a lot of other synthetic beds on Amazon have hundreds of high-praise reviews, and this bed could be on par with each one of those. I'm merely sharing my experience as someone who is extraordinarily sensitive to chemicals. If you have somewhere safe to let this bed off-gas for a couple weeks, or if the new bed smell doesn't bother you, this can be a great mattress. I still can't wait to sleep on it...

2 WEEK UPDATE:
I can sleep on it now without feeling like I'm choking on off-gas. It took well over a week to get to the point where I actually slept on it. During the day I have my bedding rolled up onto the edge so it can continue to breathe without getting the gases trapped in the bedding.

I find it to be fairly comfortable. I'm a big guy at 6'1" & 220lb, so I like a mattress that can hold up to my weight and support my body with even support, but have enough give that my arms don't fall asleep when I'm on my side. This mattress is perfect for that. I'm sleeping more soundly on it, than I was on some other memory foam that I slept on for years. The top part is very plush, but that gives to more solid layers underneath. I tend to sleep warm, and on my previous memory foam mattress I had a thick cotton layer on top to keep things on the cooler side. With this mattress I don't have an overheating feeling after a little while.

I have this on a solid top bed frame, so if this were on box springs, or slats, the support might feel weaker than it is.

6 week update:
This is a really great bed now. It only smells occasionally on the rare day of unusually warm temperatures. To be fair this never triggered any asthma symptoms after I finally let it into my bedroom after the initial off-gassing period, and I am a very sensitive individual. So after everything, I'm really happy with it.
