The Kathy Ireland Huntington Club 84" bookcase is sturdily built, well-finished, and pleasing to look at. However, the positioning of the fixed shelf and the use of additional ornamental trim severely limits the total usable vertical space. I have a cheaper, 7-shelf bookcase which has considerably more total usable vertical space, even though it is one inch shorter.

The problem with the bookcase under review is that the combination of a 2-7/8" ornamental molding at the top, and a 3/8" overlapping trim piece on each shelf, reduces the total vertical space by 5-1/8" which is about half the height of an average shelf. When trying to organize books by category, alphabetically or some other system, one finds oneself constantly frustrated, because some of the books never seem to fit on the right shelf--and I am not speaking of oversized art or presentation books. It is possible to jimmy a book under the overlap or the trim at the top, but very frustrating to then try to take it out.

I bought two of these bookcases several years ago to hold part of my 3,500-book collection. The all-wood construction was a prime factor in making this choice. However, I remember the frustration I experienced when I attempted to place my books onto the seven shelves. Now, having just moved, I am re-experiencing the difficulty. For this amount of money, I expected better. The designer obviously did not intend the bookcase solely for book storage. If you want to use the piece to show off collectibles and a few assorted books, it should work well. If you are a serious book collector, look somewhere else. I found the Ergocraft by Laguna 7-shelf bookcase a better choice. Although it is not all wood, it is sturdy, very nicely finished, and above all, it provides a proper amount of total vertical storage space. You will have to do some assembly however.
